150: Why should we love thee, Alpha, dear?

(Tune: "St. Agnes" by J. B. Dykes. 1823-76)

Why should we love thee, Alpha, dear?
Water renamed as wine;
You make it all seem crystal clear,
Our infant faith shall shine.

Whate'er our trials and torments be,
You promise sweet relief;
And claim that you can set us free
By simple, plain belief.

The sharing in a common meal
Creates the ties that bind,
And we must speak of what we feel,
And what runs through our mind.

The Bible is God's holy word,
No questions can we ask;
But to believe all that is heard
Is the true Alpha's task.

So we complete our packaged hope,
Receive the sickly smile,
Which, placed beneath life's microscope,
Won't last the extra mile.

The common church is then the place
Where broken hearts can mend,
Learning once more, the world to face,
With Jesus as our friend.

We may not have the hype and spin
That maketh Alpha known,
But we have depth of questioning
Wherein true faith is sown.
