The ambry candle has burnt out,
The Verger failed indeed.
So here I sit in church with fright
Before the Presence, in the night,
Without a light to lead.

The doors some eighty feet behind,
And forty pews beside.
I'll try to grope my way with care.
- Who left that hassock lying there?
