Hymns Modern & Ancient
86: Come and see my shining cope
(Tune: "Marching through Georgia")
Come and see my shining cope
that's hanging on the door;
fashioned from the finest cloth
a priest has ever wore,
heavy with its golden thread
that weighs ten pounds or more,
I shall look pretty this evening!
Bow down, tonight,
at Benediction time!
Bow down, that's right,
when bells at Vespers chime!
Hold in adoration now
your priest in clothes sublime:
I shall look pretty this evening!
All the vestments I have worn
have never been so rare;
since the day that I was born
it's been my single prayer
to possess the finest cope
a priest could ever bear;
I shall look pretty this evening!
Bow down, tonight,
at Benediction time!
Bow down, that's right,
when bells at Vespers chime!
Hold in adoration now
your priest in clothes sublime:
I shall look pretty this evening!
Circling round the altar high
I shall induce the smiles;
and the word will swiftly spread
so clergy come from miles
to observe this piece of "tat"
that prances up the aisles;
I shall look pretty this evening!
Bow down, tonight,
at Benediction time!
Bow down, that's right,
when bells at Vespers chime!
Hold in adoration now
your priest in clothes sublime:
I shall look pretty this evening!
