THE PLEA OF THE FEMALE ORDINAND

(pre-ordination of women to the priesthood)

I love the C of E, I do
it means so much to me.
I came to Salisbury and Wells
to train for ministry.
The numbers of male ordinands
I'm told are getting low,
there's nothing I can do for that,
for reasons that you know.

My Bishop wouldn't give me the priesthood.

I may be a deaconess
or a deacon if I'm blessed,
but I'll never be the parish priest.

But then at last the Synod took
a vote to change the law,
which made the Catholics declare
they hadn't lost the war.
But it is all so far away,
it's alright for the men;
and in the meantime I must just
be patient until then.

Although I study with the chaps
and read the same old books,
some make it very plain to me
I haven't got the looks;
they want a curate who is butch,
who really will be seen,
the trouble is that most of them
act like a blooming queen!

It makes me glad to think that I
may someday come to be
a Curate, Vicar, Archdeacon,
a Canon or a Dean.
Perhaps I'll be a Bishop,
I might even make the Pope,
until that time I'll stuff the church
and simply live in hope.
